Here I am, penning these words from the familiar landscape of our local hospital lobby. My eldest son picked up an infection that needed a doctor's eye, and thankfully, we secured an appointment straight away. Perfect, you might think? In many ways, yes. But as the minutes began their slow, deliberate march towards hours, something unexpected started to flicker to life amidst the profound boredom: that often-neglected, yet precious part of our minds β our creativity.
The Scenic Route to Patience
While we wait, the lobby acts as a revolving door of fleeting faces. At least itβs warm in here. Outside, a relentless drizzle dances with periodic downpours β a typical greeting from the northern Norwegian elements. The drive itself? Roughly an hour and twenty minutes. Thatβs just the standard time it takes to get anywhere significant around here. Think narrow roads, often of questionable quality, generously peppered with traffic. It was, let's just say, a character-building journey. (If you haven't aced your irony classes, now might be a good time for a pop quiz!)
This is the reality of life up here in the north: breathtaking nature, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, all connected by roads that seem to be maintained by someone with a vendetta against moving vehicles.
When Boredom Strikes, Creativity Awakens
One hour. Then two. We're now sailing into the third hour, and my son still hasn't been called. "He's on the list," they assure me. So, we continue to dutifully swallow our oversized pills of "sit down and wait patiently."
But hereβs the fascinating part. Iβm not really complaining (much). As I sit, suspended in this bubble of waiting, my mind has started to wander in the most delightful ways. Itβs incredible how our brains work. When weβre truly bored, when the usual stimuli fade, a different part of the brain sees its chance and springs into action. Not the part bogged down with logic, timekeeping, or stress. No, this is a hidden gem, a vibrant core of creativity that we arenβt always able to tap into.
Itβs that wondrous part of us we wielded so brilliantly as children. We were masters of this realm, so adept at blurring the lines between imagination and reality that one β limitless and unbound β often seemed more real than the other, which is governed by logic and physical constraints.
The Double-Edged Screen: A Modern Dilemma?
This train of thought inevitably led me to observe the kids I often see, deeply engrossed in their phones, tablets, or gaming devices. They are so into it, their brains firing on all cylinders from the constant stimulation. But then, games that once brought joy can suddenly trigger outbursts of anger, frustration, and sadness β exaggerated emotions that seem to spring from nowhere. A normally cheerful child can transform in an instant.
And when you finally separate them from their gadgets? They often become listless, almost like zombies disconnected from their power source. It makes me wonder: does excessive screen time chip away at that precious gem of creativity with every login, every extended session? Is the constant dopamine drip replacing the quieter, deeper satisfaction of self-generated wonder?
A Dad's Musings from the Waiting Room (Ironically, Via Phone)
Of course, I could be entirely off base here. Iβm just a dad, currently marinating in boredom in a hospital waiting room, whose own creative gem has ironically been activated whileβ¦ you guessed itβ¦ being online with my phone. Perhaps itβs not the technology itself thatβs the issue, but how we engage with it, and whether we consciously carve out those quiet, "boring" moments for our minds to truly wander and explore.
These are just the unfiltered thoughts of a dad with too much time on his hands, and a newly rediscovered appreciation for the power of a good, old-fashioned wait.
Thoughts are free, and Iβd love to hear yours in the comments below. What sparks your creativity when youβre forced to pause?
